First things first, traveling for 13 months across six continents can be an expensive affair! To afford this 13-month long adventure we targeted a daily budget of $200, an amount we thought would be enough to cover our accommodation, food, transportation, activities, and miscellaneous expenses on most days. We wanted to make sure our budget would be healthy enough to afford our bucket list activities, stay at a variety of interesting accommodations, and eat the unique food we found in each of our destinations. Of course we know there are going to be some destinations where we spend a little bit more per day and others where we spend a little less, but having our target daily budget helps us stay in a responsible mindset about spending money.
To equal $200 per day across 392 days, we needed to save $78,400 across our preparation years of 2022 and 2023, by both reducing our typical day-to-day spending and increasing the amount we were automatically saving from our paychecks. We stayed pretty tight to our target goals during our two prep years, maxing out our travel savings at $84,255. However, before we even left the United States we had already spent over $7,000 on some recommended travel vaccinations & medicines, travel insurance, and our starting flight to Thailand, bringing us just back below our target travel savings. We also needed to plan for some post-trip expenses like our flight home and supplementary health insurance we’d have to purchase for our final month of travel. To feel comfortable about being able to cover these expenses at a later date, we put aside $1,000 from our main savings account. After accounting for these pre-departure & post-trip expenses, we finalized our 13-month travel account at $76,000 or $193.83 per day during our trip, an amount we believe will still be enough to make this year unforgettable!
You can find a detailed breakdown of the countries we’ve already been to below, and we will continue to update these as we go. We know it’s going to be a constant challenge to stick to our daily average, and it doesn’t help that we’re starting with three of our most expensive destinations… but we’re going to stay positive and do the best we can. We hope these guides can help you estimate what you would need to travel comfortably if you plan on visiting any of the nations we’ve been to!
